Overview

This temporary seasonal position supports the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s 1 City 1 Food Drive campaign. The goal of this campaign is to call on every Chicagoan to join us in the fight against hunger by donating one bag of food, one hour of their time, or one dollar. Through a combined effort of more than 600 community food drives and 10 to 15 larger strategic food drive partners and events, our goal this year is to collect 1.5 million meals.  

 

During the holiday season the food drives team receives hundreds of emails and calls every day. We are looking for two high energy people to assist the food drives team in carrying out a successful food drive season this November and December. Start date mid/end of October through mid-January, 2018.

Responsibilities

Customer service

  • Answer emails and phone calls
  • Attend to the public picking up supplies and/or dropping off food
  • Show appreciation and understanding in every conversation
  • Work well with the public, staff and volunteers

Logistical expertise

  • Help coordinate pick-up and delivery requests of materials and food donations
  • Assist with accepting and processing food donations
  • Help with weighing and tracking all food donations
  • Work with larger team coordinating incoming donations and drivers

Tracking existing food drives/materials

  • Download and update food drive data files
  • Use existing database to track all food donations and supplies with tremendous detail

Acknowledgement assistance

  • Prepare and mail donor packets
  • Produce acknowledgement letters and emails for participants

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Microsoft office (Outlook Email, Excel and Word Mail-Merge) proficiency
  • Very comfortable using Outlook email system
  • Ability to learn computer program to track food donations
  • Strong, clear and understanding phone manner – accepting calls and answering questions, responding to donor inquiries and requests
  • Experience with an inventory or supply database helpful
  • Knowledge of the work and mission of the Greater Chicago Food Depository
  • Very enthusiastic and energetic – willing to take on challenging day to day tasks
  • Non-profit experience preferred
  • Attention to detail
  • Own a mobile phone
  • Access to car and valid IL driver’s license
  • Able to lift 40 lbs.
  • Daily movement of boxes, barrels, bags and rolling carts
  • Ability to work early mornings, some Saturdays, and evenings as needed.  Will work on Thanksgiving Day early morning to assist with the Turkey Day 5K race in Chicago
  • Available to work through mid-January 2018
