  • Overview

    Support the approved Public Policy & Advocacy Agenda with directed initiatives, assigned policy research, and manage the Food Depository’s network of advocates under the direction of the Government Relations and Policy Manager.  This role will help galvanize a network of advocates across the faith community, business, college students and the broader community all committed to ending hunger in our community.

    Responsibilities

    • Inspire the Food Depository’s existing advocacy network groups (including Champion Advocates and the Associate Board) by enhancing members’ knowledge of policy issues, increasing membership, and increasing participation and engagement opportunities. 
    • Develop an expanded advocacy network in sectors and communities that align with the Food Depository’s advocacy agenda and policy priorities. 
    • Educate our advocacy network through regular updates including legislative update webinars, advocacy action alerts, meeting presentations, elected official newsletters, legislative updates and/or via other channels. 
    • Support the Food Depository's advocacy network’s participation in the annual Illinois End Hunger Now Lobby Day in Springfield including promotion, management of registration logistics and bus transportation to Springfield, and training and preparing participants to advocate to their state legislators.
    • Assist Government Relations and Policy Manager with elected official outreach activities and follow-up.
    • Assist with coordinating the Food Depository’s scholarship program, and participation of self –paid advocates and staff in the Anti-Hunger Policy Conference and Lobby Day in Washington, D.C.
    • Assist in planning the annual Hunger Summit
    • Research relevant food and nutrition policy topics and prepare longer research briefs as needed.
    • Assist with incorporating advocacy as a key component of the Annual Hunger Walk.
    • Participate in advocacy-related meetings, events and conferences.
    • Collaborate/partner with a wide variety of functional areas (programs, marketing, development) within the Food Depository to help support the network of Champion Advocates
    • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree or graduate level work in public policy, social work, public health, urban planning or a related field is preferred.
    • 3+ years advocacy, community organizing, political campaign or experience.
    • Excellent written, oral and organizational skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency in MS Office- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
    • Ability to effectively manage complex projects and work with minimal supervision.

     Exposure:

    • Normal office environment.
    • Out of office meetings and events.
    • Interacts with GCFD staff, political and community leaders, federal, state, and local government staff, volunteers, member agencies and general public.
